Gene Hermanski, dead at 90

Sadly, my Dodgers are passing away at an alarming rate these days. Following the recent passings of Billy Loes and John Van Cuyk, Hermanski is the third Brooklyn Dodger to pass in just over a month.

I learned today that Gene Hermanski died on August 9th. He was 90 years old. Gene is probably most well known in the trading card world for his 1949 Leaf error card, where his name is spelled "Hermansk" on the card. Apparently there was a printing flaw. Hermanski was mainly a spare outfielder for the Dodgers teams of the late 40s that were so stacked with talent. Perhaps had he played elsewhere, he may have had a larger impact. He also played briefly for Chicago (N) and Pittsburgh. His best statistical year was 1948 with Brooklyn, when he hit .290 with 116 hits, 15 HRs and 60 RBIs. He appeared in 2 World Series (1947 & 1949) with Brooklyn.

RIP Mr. Eugene Victor Hermanski. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of Dodger fans throughout the world!
